KUALA LUMPUR: They have, in their own ways, demonstrated their talent, persistence and passion to achieve their dreams.
And that is why Maxis have signed up these seven athletes ? from badminton, squash, diving and cycling ? to be their sports ambassadors.
Maxis will commit an estimated RM2mil on shuttlers Lee Chong Wei, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boong Heong; cyclist Azizulhasni Awang; squash player Mohd Azlan Iskandar; and divers Pandelela Rinong and Leong Mun Yee until the end of next year.
Each athlete will be provided with a monthly stipend for maintaing the same world rankings, with additional sum for every step up the world rankings.
Each winner of a gold, silver or bronze medal at the London Olympics next year will also be entitled to a bonus sum proportionate to their win.
Except for squash player Azlan, the others are all under the Road to London programme targeted for the Olympics next year.
Maxis will also provide each ambassador with two mobile and one tablet device of their choice together with a wireless broadband range to help them stay in touch during training and competition.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Shabery Cheek said it was a timely boost for the athletes as ?they are in the midst of preparing to do well at the London Olympics next year?.

?These seven athletes have proven themselves at the Asian and Commonwealth Games last year. The next major competition for them will be the Olympics in London and we are hopeful of achieving a big breakthrough for Malaysia,? he said.
?We are not just hopeful of getting our first gold medal but more than one medal from these athletes.?
Azlan, the Guangzhou Asian Games men?s individual gold medallist, welcomed the initiative from the telco company.
?It makes us feel appreciated. We are athletes but we have our bills to pay like every other working people.
?I sometimes think squash is a minority sport and that?s why I feel blessed to be part of this elite group here today to receive this kind of support,? said the national No. 1.
All were present at the function yesterday except for Mun Yee and Pandelela, who are currently in China preparing for the World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai from July 16-31.
