Should you be a shopping Good Samaritan?

Say you see someone in a store who’s about to pay more than they have to for an item. Would you let the person know?

A few days ago, Sarah and I were buying shoes for our daughter. She?s graduating to shoes with laces, as she?s developed the finger strength and dexterity to tie them for herself, plus her feet are just getting too big for her old ones.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

After checking prices in several different stores, we found the perfect pair in an outlet store. The little girl fell in love with the purple design and the sparkles, I respected the sturdy craftsmanship, and the price was pretty solid, too ? around $12.

Content with our purchase, we looked around for other items in the same area. We walked down to another outlet store about a block away and found ourselves browsing a mix of children?s clothing and shoes.

While there, Sarah spied a family of six ? two adults and four small girls ? trying on shoes. One of the pairs that one of the girls was trying on was virtually identical to the pair we had just bought for our daughter (it might have actually been the same model, but I wasn?t quite close enough to tell ? suffice it to say that they were very similar). They then talked about the price of the shoes, and I saw Sarah almost choke when she heard that the family was about to pay $50 for that pair of shoes.

She couldn?t hold it in. She spoke up by tapping the mother on the shoulder and saying that we had found almost the exact same pair of shoes for 80% less at a store down the block. The mother?s eyes lit up, she thanked Sarah several times, and that family practically ran out of that store.

Since then, I?ve been flipping this situation over and over again in my mind.

First of all, is it intrusive to suggest lower prices to other customers? If I know that a person can get a lower price on a particular item elsewhere, do I feel appropriate telling them so? On the flip side, if a person in the store knows I can get an item at a lower price elsewhere, is it appropriate that they tell me?

For some people, the answer to both of these might be ?yes;? for others, it?s always a ?no.? For me, it?s a ?sometimes,? mostly depending on context and often depending on how outgoing I?m feeling in that moment.

On the other hand, does it really make a difference whether I?m standing in a store or not? I?m very much willing to share a deal while sitting at my computer. I often visit blogs that share deals, particularly when I?m trying to find a discount on a particular item. Friends often email me deals on things they know I?m looking for, and I do the same for them.

In both cases, context really matters. I simply wouldn?t do such a thing at my preferred local game store, for example, because I value the continued existence of that business and I know that the multitude of services they provide are subsidized by selling things at MSRP. On the other hand, at a large chain store, I?d find myself much more likely to do it, particularly if the savings is quite large.

In the end, I don?t think there?s really anything wrong with sharing bargains with other customers in a store. Much of it has to do with your own social skills and the approachability of the other person.

This brings me to another interesting situation I found myself in recently. When I was shopping at a local store, I was picking up a container of my youngest son?s favorite fruit juice when I noticed that someone had actually stuffed a coupon for the item down inside the label so that part of the coupon was hanging out of the package. Naturally, I used the coupon.

It left me thinking about the person that did this, though. Most likely, a person clipped the coupon, decided it was still too much even with the discount, and decided to leave the coupon for some other buyer (in this case, me). That seems reasonable.

I often clip a lot of coupons that I don?t use. Should I just attach them all in a similar fashion as this mystery juice shopper did for me? Perhaps I could create a culture of coupon paying-it-forward at my local grocery store.

A week later when I was at the store again, I found myself leaving behind six coupons. I just stuck them inside of labels or left them on top of packages. I?d like to think that six lucky customers found the coupons, saved some money, and then maybe one or two of them decided to help someone else save a buck as well.

I think the notion of paying it forward is really what it all comes down to. If you have a chance to share savings with someone else and feel comfortable doing so, share it. It costs you nothing, but it certainly helps the other customer. Perhaps that person will share a savings tip with another person or two and someday the savings will come back around to you.

ADHD Diagnosis Rates Rose Sharply in Past Decade

FRIDAY, March 23 (HealthDay News) — In the past decade, the number of children receiving a diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has risen by 66 percent, new research indicates.

In 2000, just 6.2 million physician office visits resulted in a diagnosis of ADHD. By 2010, that number had jumped to 10.4 million office visits.

“This study is really like a 10,000 foot aerial view of this issue,” said study author Dr. Craig Garfield, an assistant professor of pediatrics and medical social sciences at Northwestern University in Chicago. “We looked at the trends in visits to doctors for ADHD over the last decade, and we were interested in overlaying some of the FDA‘s public health advisories and the introduction of new medications to see the effect on those trends.”

The findings are published in the March/April issue of Academic Pediatrics.

ADHD is now a common condition in children and teenagers in the United States, according to background information in the study. The parent-reported incidence of the disorder is about 10 percent, or 5.4 million children. Symptoms of ADHD include an inability to focus, trouble controlling emotions and hyperactive behavior, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

Treatment for ADHD may include medications — usually stimulant drugs — and behavioral therapies, according to the NIMH. However, new medications — and new health concerns — altered treatment decisions over the decade studied.

In 2002, a nonstimulant medication, Strattera (atomoxetine), was approved for use in ADHD. In 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued warnings that sudden death and suicidal thinking had been linked to Strattera. That same year, the FDA also expressed concern about a potential link between amphetamine-dextroamphetamine (Adderall) and cardiovascular risks, as well as adverse psychiatric symptoms. That same warning was extended to all approved ADHD medications in 2007, according to the study.

For their study, Garfield and his colleagues reviewed data from a national database from 2000 to 2010. They examined office visits for patients younger than 18.

In addition to finding a 66 percent increase in the number of office visits resulting in an ADHD diagnosis, they also found that more children were being treated for ADHD by child psychiatrists than by pediatricians. At the start of the study, about one in four children saw a psychiatrist for their condition. By the end of the study, more than one in three was visiting a psychiatrist for ADHD.

Despite possible concerns about safety, stimulant medications remain the mainstay of treatment. In 2000, 96 percent were treated with these medications, while 87 percent were receiving stimulant medication for their ADHD symptoms in 2010, the study found.

The use of Strattera, a nonstimulant drug, dropped from 15 percent in the year it was introduced (2002) to 6 percent by 2010. The use of other nonstimulant treatments, such as clonidine (Catapres/Kapvay/Nexiclon), guanfacine (Intuniv/Tenex) and Wellbutrin (buproprion), was relatively constant, but reached a high of 13 percent in 2010 following the introduction of extended-release Intuniv, the researchers found.

One previous study, published online last September in the American Journal of Psychiatry, found that about 2.8 million children were taking ADHD medications. Those authors said their use has risen gradually, likely because more teenagers are taking these medications.

The authors of the current study don’t think there’s suddenly been a dramatic rise in the number of children with ADHD, but instead believe that public awareness campaigns, media coverage of ADHD and advertisements for new medications are probably some of the driving factors behind the rise in diagnoses.

“There’s more of an awareness on the part of the parents about this disease,” said Garfield.

He said that the authors don’t know why more people are taking their children to see psychiatrists for treatment, but said if the trend continues, parents may have trouble finding a doctor to care for their child’s ADHD, given the shortage of psychiatrists.

Other experts agreed that the incidence of ADHD probably isn’t going up that quickly. “I don’t think these data reflect true prevalence. I think it’s the total frequency of visits related to ADHD is going up,” said Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

“The American Academy of Pediatrics is encouraging pediatricians to play a more active role in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, so it’s interesting to see that psychiatrists over time are now treating more,” he said. “Pediatricians may be referring more, or as safety concerns have been raised by the FDA, it may be that families prefer to see a specialist.”

Roche to sell cheaper cancer drugs in India

MUMBAI | Fri Mar 23, 2012 10:23am GMT

MUMBAI (Reuters) – Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding (ROG.VX) plans to offer cut-price versions of two blockbuster cancer drugs for the Indian market soon, a company spokesman said on Friday, days after the government moved to slash the price of another cancer treatment.

India stripped German group Bayer (BAYGn.DE) of exclusive rights to Nexavar earlier this month and licenced a local company to produce a cheap, generic version, on the grounds poor that Indians could not otherwise afford the life-saving drug.

Roche, the world’s biggest maker of cancer drugs, said it would offer “significantly” cheaper, locally branded versions of its two cancer drugs, Herceptin and MabThera, by early next year, under an alliance with India’s Emcure Pharmaceuticals.

“The scope is to enable access for a large majority of patients who currently pay out of pocket as well as to partner with the government to enable increased access to our products for people in need,” spokesman Daniel Grotzky said by phone from company headquarters in Basel, Switzerland.

Monthly doses of Herceptin, for breast cancer, and MabThera, for cancers of the blood and lymph system, cost around $3,000 to $4,500 per patient at wholesale prices, Grotzky said.

“With this strategy, we expect to significantly increase the number of patients treated with our therapies and help patients currently under treatment to continue to use our products properly,” he added.

He would not be drawn on how much the local versions would cost, nor whether Roche was responding to the Bayer case.

The move highlights a growing debate about the cost of modern cancer medicines, which often work far better than traditional chemotherapy but come at a much high price.

In other areas of medicines – notably HIV/AIDS drugs for Africa – drug companies have already cut prices substantially. More recently, some firms, including GlaxoSmithKline (GSK.L), have also been experimenting with discounts on certain products in middle-income countries.

However, Roche has in the past argued that consumers everywhere should pay the same price for its cancer drugs.

NEW DRUG NAMES

The Swiss company said the cheaper versions would be renamed for the Indian market and be packed by Emcure Pharmaceuticals in an effort to gain market share, confirming an earlier report in the Wall Street Journal.

The decision to give the cheaper versions distinct names for the Indian market may help Roche limit the risk that wholesalers buy up the products and try and re-sell them in premium-priced markets such as the United States and Europe.

The trading of pharmaceuticals by middlemen, often via Internet pharmacies, is a growing headache for drug companies and can conceal counterfeits – as happened recently when fake copies of Avastin, another Roche drug, where shipped from the Middle East through Europe to California.

Under the deal with Emcure, Roche will continue to make the cancer medicines at its plants in the United States, Singapore and Germany and ship vials of the drugs to Emcure for packaging. Grotzky added that the alliance was triggered in part by India’s desire to see global pharmaceutical companies sign partnerships with Indian companies.

In the Bayer case, the Indian government for the first time issued a so-called compulsory licence to local drugmaker Natco Pharma (NATP.NS) to make and sell a generic version of Bayer’s Nexavar, a liver and kidney cancer drug, inside the country.

Under world trade rules, compulsory licences are available to nations to issue in certain cases where life-saving treatments are unaffordable.

With around 40 percent of India’s population living below the poverty line, healthcare is an upper-middle-class luxury.

Campaigners for cheaper access to drugs hailed the Bayer decision, which was taken after the country’s patent office said Nexavar was not “reasonably affordably priced”.

But the ruling reignited fears amongst global drugmakers like Pfizer (PFE.N), GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis (NOVN.VX). They see huge potential in rapidly growing economies such as India but are wary of intellectual property protection.

Natco will retail Nexavar at 8,800 rupees ($172) for a monthly dose, a fraction of the 280,000 rupees ($5,469) Bayer’s version costs.

Things To Know When Beginning A Home Improvement Project …

A big part of improving our living spaces involves decorating and making our homes and living areas beautiful. It may sound simple, especially since there are a lot of instructional and inspirational materials available in magazines, on TV and online, but decorating our homes can be a bit costly and complicated if we don?t know what we?re doing. One of the plumbers who also offered services in the house plans and the coastal property deals provided the following information.

Embarking on home improvement and decorating projects without proper planning and preparation can make things difficult for us. Costly mistakes can be avoided if we collect our thoughts, write down what needs to be done, and proceed according to the plan. If we are decorating a particular room in our home, we should first sketch the floor plan, complete with accurate measurements of the floor space, windows, doors, as well as where built-in shelves and electrical sockets are located. Once you have all these things listed down on paper, it?s much easier to find furniture pieces and fixtures with the right dimensions to fit your room. The next thing we need to consider is your personal style which will reflect in the room?s theme and color scheme.

A lot of people already have an idea of what they want their living spaces to look like; however, some people need a little bit more inspiration. This is where decorating magazines and lifestyle television shows play a big role. When going through these magazines and watching these shows, there is usually a particular design concept that catches our eye. We can use these concepts as a basis for our design and add personal touches to make it our own. Once we have a theme and a color scheme to work with, we can now start shopping, refurbishing, or building furniture and fixtures to match our design idea.

Sometimes, people tend to get distracted and be overwhelmed by certain things that can put them away from their original plan; thereby complicating the home improvement project. The rest of the job becomes easier as long as we have a solid plan to follow. We may have to make changes or adjustments later on, but having a plan helps us complete our home improvement projects faster and within our budget.

Property Investing in Rental Qualities ? Blog By Dale C. Pearson

There are numerous techniques through which somebody may make a dwelling in terms of commercial real estate investing a number of them have far more dangers than others. It goes without the need of saying that those that have the greatest pitfalls are often the quite housing investment procedures using the maximum likely gain but sluggish and continuous, in many cases, wins the race. Flipping houses is while in the reports lots mainly because a lot of fortunes have already been produced performing this-more than a number of happen to be missing during this venture in addition but those you should not make the reports just about as usually.

Working with rental qualities just isn?t nearly as glamorous and won?t give the practically quick gains that flipping residences could possibly but it really can be an awesome and very valid approach of warehouse space for lease investing that could construct a gradual revenue with time in case you method adequately. Rental qualities are in desire now in excess of actually with countless people likely into foreclosure and shedding the households they have labored tough to build for his or her households. This is why rental attributes are a great matter to very own right now, especially those that are household households.

There are lots of explanations that individuals rent and though there are numerous risks involved when renting qualities, the hazards are substantially reduce than the dangers associated with flipping or pre-construction expense endeavors. There are some things you should really think about when paying for a property for your sake of leasing nonetheless if you want for making a clever and long lasting determination for your personal property expenditure.

First, only invest in rental attributes in parts that people wish to are in. It could be genuine that you just can purchase residence cheap in a very couple of really run down sections of city but it surely is doubtful that you will switch all those attributes into lucrative rental units. It?s most effective to spend a bit more for your a lot more desirable deal with for renters. You will discover that your attributes are inhabited a lot more often, that will make you a lot more money in the long run.

Second, pay attention towards the varieties of people within the space and purchase rentals appropriately. It can be quite possible to turn big residences into numerous scaled-down apartment models (in accordance to nearby zoning legislation) that are suitable for school students. You do not need to try this nevertheless in a place that is definitely geared in direction of friends and family homes and would not be friendly or tolerant of college college students. Style the rentals based on the sector you might be attempting to attract.

3rd, really don?t be greedy. The aim of possessing office space is naturally, to help make dollars. Simultaneously if your price tag your attributes as well superior you?ll find they sit empty far more usually than not. Each individual thirty day period that your house is empty is actually a thirty day period that you simply are not earning funds on that home at most effective plus a thirty day period you are shedding funds at worst.

Fourth, know the marketplace. Analyze the local sector for purchasing housing and leasing real estate. This will likely assist with many points, not the minimum of that?s pinpointing whether or not or not any provided residence could make a beautiful rental unit. A different thing it should help you determine is simply how much hire the models you?re contemplating can deliver in month right after month.

Finally, when renting properties you have to retain your eye on the long-term objectives relatively than shortsighted aims. Residence rental can be a marathon alternatively than a sprint using the finest income coming with the conclude. You will need to pay out as very little fascination on the house as is possible and spend the property off as immediately as you can as a way to understand the utmost income possible and purchase new qualities. The real money when renting attributes as a real-estate expenditure is not in leasing out one or two models but 20 or 30. The more rental qualities you personal the more cash you stand to produce from proudly owning them.

Jordan Schultz: Draymond Green Leads Michigan State Over Bilikens Into Sweet 16

Michigan State is headed to yet another Sweet 16; the 2012 version of the Spartans is a mirror image of previous years’ teams — full of grit, girth and intelligence.

In a Big Ten-type battle against a very well-coached and feisty St. Louis team, Tom Izzo’s club once again displayed excellent perseverance and mental toughness. Unable to sustain its double-digit lead at the start of the second half, the Spartans relied heavily on senior Draymond Green — as they have all season long — to come up with one critical bucket and rebound after another. In the game, Green — who against LIU Brooklyn became just the third player in NCAA history to record two triple-doubles in the tournament — finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Perhaps the hidden beauty of this Spartan team, though, lies in centers Derrick Nix and Adreian Payne. While great guard play often defines success for teams deep into March, having two effective — if not spectacular — big men in the middle is sometimes even more significant.

Payne, who is the far better athlete, is a 6-foot-11 jumping jack who protects the paint, while Nix has become a reliable low-post option and quality rebounder.

Against the Bilikens today, Payne threw down a vicious one-handed dunk and provided stellar interior defense — on and off the ball — of forwards Brian Conklin and Dwayne Evans, St. Louis’ best overall athlete.

He and Nix also clogged the driving lanes of Kwamain Mitchell, the Bilikens’ second leading scorer and best creator off the bounce.

Nix, meanwhile, had timely buckets and crucial rebounds once again for a Spartan team that ranks second in the nation in total rebounding. He and Payne combined for 14 points and 8 rebounds in 40 minutes.

The marked improvement of this roster is indeed one of the redeeming qualities of this particular Tom Izzo team. Payne and Nix were both massive recruits that up until the midway point of this season had mostly underachieved during their time in East Lansing. Green was always a solid player, but until his senior year, had struggled with weight issues and defense. Having lost 20 lbs. before the season, though, he has embraced the role of team captain and go-to player in every which way. His 16 point and 10 rebound averages lead Sparty, but he is also its unquestioned emotional leader.

“I look at [former Spartan Mateen] Cleaves, now Draymond Green is one of them,” a very versatile athlete that is a good leader and a tough guy, Izzo told the New York Post.

Entering the Sweet 16 next week against Rick Pitino’s uber-hot Louisville club, State — the one seed in the West region — will be in familiar territory. It doesn’t have the sheer talent of a Kentucky or North Carolina, but it does have terrific team chemistry, the Big Ten Player of the Year in Green — and of course, Tom Izzo, who remains as motivated to win as ever before.

“The biggest thing on my bucket list is trying to get in that fraternity of 10 — try to go from winning one national championship to two,” he added. “It’s okay to be in the one of 45 or 50 guys, but I’d like to get in that one of 10 or 11.”

On Writing and Speaking ? Scott Berkun

Paul Graham wrote recently on his perspectives on the written vs. spoken word.

Graham admits he?s more confident as a writer than a speaker. This biases his comparisons and his essay. He?d have benefited from talking to people who he thinks are both good speakers and good thinkers (and perhaps good writers) as they?d have the balanced perspective he admits he does not have. He writes:

Having good ideas is most of writing well. If you know what you?re talking about, you can say it in the plainest words and you?ll be perceived as having a good style. With speaking it?s the opposite: having good ideas is an alarmingly small component of being a good speaker.

Most writers are unable to write in plain words or unable to find good ideas. Why? I don?t know, but it?s harder than Graham suggests for most people on this planet to do. Graham has ideas and does write well in a simple style, but he?s assuming most people can do it because he can. Read the web for an hour: this is not the case. It?s splitting hairs to argue over whether there is more bad writing or bad speaking on planet earth since there is so much of both.

Speaking is harder in many ways than writing because it is performance. You have to do it live. Some people who do not like to perform try to do what Graham does: they try to memorize their way through it, which doesn?t work. You tend to fail when using a method for one form in another form. Performance means there is no undo and no revision, which is a huge part of the appeal of seeing bands and people do things live and in person. It?s why I?m paid more as a speaker than I am as a writer:??the same was true for Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and even David Sedaris or Malcolm Gladwell.

Writing is harder in some ways than speaking. Writing must be self contained: there is no body language or vocal?emphasis as everything must be in the words themselves. But the ability to revise and edit dozens of times narrows the gap. With enough work you can revise your way into competence. Yet speaking is performance: there is no revision of an event. You can perform it again to improve on mistakes, but each instance must be done every time. When you finish an essay, it is done forever.

Graham writes:

With speaking it?s the opposite: having good ideas is an alarmingly small component of being a good speaker.?I first noticed this at a conference several years ago. There was another speaker who was much better than me. He had all of us roaring with laughter. I seemed awkward and halting by comparison. Afterward I put my talk online like I usually do. As I was doing it I tried to imagine what a transcript of the other guy?s talk would be like, and it was only then I realized he hadn?t said very much.

This confuses entertainment with expression. Popular writing can be?similarly?hijacked ? look at twitter and the web ? all media has this problem. There are different tricks to use in each form, but an essay can make you laugh, or make you angry, or make you hit the Facebook like button, despite not saying much, or anything at all.

I do agree with Graham that some speakers and ?thinkers? are popular solely because they are?likable?and entertain, or?infuriate?and inflame. But this is a failing of all mediums, including writing.

Graham continues:

?A few years later I heard a talk by someone who was not merely a better speaker than me, but a famous speaker. Boy was he good. So I decided I?d pay close attention to what he said, to learn how he did it. After about ten sentences I found myself thinking ?I don?t want to be a good speaker.??Being a really good speaker is not merely orthogonal to having good ideas, but in many ways pushes you in the opposite direction.

Wow.

Emerson, Gandhi, Churchill, MLK, Jesus, Socrates, Lincoln, Mandala. These are a handful of great thinkers who used speaking as a primary medium of expression.

It?s true that much of what some of them spoke was heavily written before it was spoken, but the world experienced these ideas first as spoken words.

I have to stop here to acknowledge that the history of thinking was spoken. The Ancient Greeks, where many of our big ideas still come from, talked. Writing as a primary way to express ideas wouldn?t arrive for 1500 years. Talking and thinking have a much older relationship than writing and thinking. That doesn?t mean speaking is better ? writing has many advantages ? but to sweep speaking aside is foolish, and reflects Graham?s bias more than his wisdom. ?Many ideas at many startups are discovered, shared and developed through spoken words. Pitch meetings, arguments at whiteboards, late night hacking sessions, discussions over lunch: it?s heavily spoken word. Life is mostly spoken, not written.

Graham continues:

The way to get the attention of an audience is to give them?your?full attention, and when you?re delivering a prewritten talk your attention is always divided between the audience and the talk?even if you?ve memorized it. If you want to engage an audience it?s better start with no more than an outline of what you want to say and?ad lib the individual sentences.

This is where Graham, whose work I admire, makes a big mistake. He has admitted he?s not a good speaker and doesn?t like the form. Why then does he feel qualified to give advice on how to do it well?

In my bestseller? The Confessions of a Public Speaker?I carefully explain audience attention depends on answering questions they came to hear. The majority of speakers fail at this, focusing on what they themselves wish to speak about, or what their slides will look like, rather than their audience. Speaking, like writing, is an ego trap. It?s not about you, it?s about them: what questions do they want answered? What stories did they come to hear? If you understand why your audience showed up at all, and deliver on it, you will keep their attention. Graham?s advice is all about the speaker, but that?s the common tragedy ? it?s not about speaker. A speaker who studies the audience and puts together content that addresses their interests will always do well. They?re rare.

?Before I give a talk I can usually be found sitting in a corner somewhere with a copy printed out on paper, trying to rehearse it in my head. But I always end up spending most of the time rewriting it instead.

I would never do this. I stay up late the night before, if needed, to finish preparing. I practice the talk several times,?revising?if needed, until I?m comfortable. This comfort allows me to be fully present with an audience and not worried about my knowledge of my own material. This is also how I ad-lib or change directions based on a live audience. My?preparation?gives me the confidence to make adjustments. ?An hour before my talk I?m not thinking much about my talk at all.

I do agree with Graham in some ways. I do?prefer writing at times. But unlike Graham, I love both forms. I know I become a better writer every time I speak, and become a better speaker every time I write.
