Kitsch swaps ‘Friday Night Lights’ for sci-fi (omg!)

In this undated photo Canadian actor and model Taylor Kitsch plays John Carter in a scene from epic science fiction film 'John Carter'. The "Friday Night Lights" are far beyond him now. LONDON (AP) ? The “Friday Night Lights” are far beyond Taylor Kitsch now. These days, if he sees something bright on the horizon, chances are it is extraterrestrial.

“That’s how I pick my roles,” the 30-year-old British Columbian-born actor explained. “‘Wait, is there aliens in it? Oh well, why am I doing it, why would you call me if there are no aliens in it?’ That’s basically how it goes.”

He’s joking, but it’s true. Kitsch has leading roles in two big movies this year ? “Battleship” and “John Carter” ? that will see him leave the small town Texas football scene of the critically acclaimed “FNL” TV series for the big screen world of sci-fi.

First up is Disney’s interpretation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel, released in March. “John Carter” sees Kitsch play a former military captain who is transported to Mars, a planet being torn apart by war.

It’s directed by Andrew Stanton ? of “Finding Nemo” and “WALL-E” fame ? who is helming his first-live action movie.

Carter gets caught up in the conflicts and jumps into battle with a sword, loin cloth and plenty of muscle. Kitsch said Stanton insisted on a grueling regimen to get him mentally and physically prepared.

“It’s the most boring diet you could think of, really, it was four months before and seven months during, so an eleven-month regimen with that. Good times,” he told The Associated Press in an interview. “Training at 4:30 in the morning before you go to work, and then training for the four months before as well. And then during the day, you’re training as well before takes.”

But he said it was portraying Carter’s feelings that really drained him.

“I’d say the emotion is probably the toughest thing especially, it’s quite heavy some of the stuff he goes through,” he said.

After that, it’s Peter Berg’s “Battleship,” which also stars Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard and features Rihanna in her movie debut. Loosely based on the classic naval combat game from Hasbro, it sees five ships take on another five ships from a different planet.

“Battleship” reaches U.K. theaters April 13 before hitting the U.S. in May.

The Canadian actor says he really enjoyed collaborating with his old “FNL” executive producer Berg on his “Battleship” role of naval officer Lt. Alex Hopper. There are still aliens but this time instead of a dusty planet there’s a lot of ocean.

Kitsch says he found his sea legs pretty quickly, which was good because the crew spent several weeks shooting on the water and some scenes had him blown straight into the ocean.

“So many variables come into play, obviously time consuming, you’re always fighting the light apparently when you’re shooting outside,” he noted.

Still, Kitsch was very happy with the result.

“It’s seamless the way they’ve done it,” he said.

Why Jerry Brown is standing firm on shaky California high-speed rail plan

Another report critical of California’s $100-billion high-speed rail project ? the second this month ? has not shaken Gov. Jerry Brown’s faith in the plan. He has his eyes on his legacy, some say.

A new report by the state auditor concludes that?California?s proposed $98.5 billion bullet train is ?increasingly risky? and has inadequate oversight, adding to a growing pile of formal assessments that raise major concerns about the project.

Three weeks ago, an independent panel required by law to review the plans said the bullet train poses ?an immense financial risk.? And in November, California’s?independent Legislative Analyst?s Office said parts of the plan don?t comply with the 2008 ballot measure that authorized state funding for the project.?

Undeterred, Gov. Jerry Brown is pressing ahead, claiming that the train will create jobs, accommodate future population growth, and aid the environment.

In his state-of-the-state address Jan. 15, he said boldly:??During the 1930s, the Central Valley Water Project was called a ‘fantastic dream’ that ‘will not work.’ The Master Plan for the Interstate Highway System in 1939 was derided as ‘New Deal jitterbug economics.’ In 1966, then-Mayor Johnson of?Berkeley?called [the Bay Area Rapid Transit system] a ‘billion dollar potential fiasco.’ Similarly, the Panama Canal was for years thought to be impractical and [British Prime Minister] Benjamin Disraeli himself said of the?Suez Canal: ‘totally impossible to be carried out.’ “

“The critics were wrong then and they?re wrong now,? he concluded.

Political analysts say Governor Brown has his eye on history, trying to be mentioned favorably alongside his father, Pat Brown, who was governor from 1959 to 1967 and whose achievements virtually define modern?California.

?Governor Brown is seeking to define his legacy, and public mass transportation is one of the things in which he deeply believes,? says Michael Shires, a public policy specialist at?Pepperdine?University. ?The creation of a high-speed rail link would allow him to leave an imprint on the state that is in the same universe as his father’s legacy of water projects, universities, and highways.? ?

The state auditor’s report, however, spoke harshly of the plan. It notes that only $12.5 billion of the $100 billion-plus project is secured, with no indication of how the rest is to be obtained. It also claimed that the California High-Speed Rail Authority doesn’t have mechanisms in place for monitoring its contractors.

Supporters of the project say the 220-m.p.h. trains will transform transportation in the state and create jobs. The move is also shrewd politically for Brown, helping him with unions, who helped elect him and whose support he needs for a tax-hike initiative this fall, analysts say. Plus, touting rail has very little downside for now.

?Particularly during a difficult recession, reminding voters of long term makes him look like a visionary,? says Dan Schnur,?director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at the?University?of?Southern California.

It was the Obama administration, he and others note, that last year pushed the idea of a national, high-speed rail network.

Japan’s NEC to slash 10,000 jobs (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? NEC Corp said on Thursday it aims to shed 10,000 jobs by the end of September, and would fail to reach a target to raise sales to 4 trillion yen ($51.13 billion) by March 2013.

The job cuts, which will mean shedding almost one in 10 of its workers, are to trim costs after the electronics maker announced a loss of 87 billion yen ($1.11 billion) for the three months to December 31.

The company, which employs 115,840 people worldwide, said it will book a 40 billion yen charge in the business year ending on March 31 to pay for the restructuring.

It blamed its poor performance on tougher competition in the telecoms infrastructure business in Japan from foreign rivals, weak demand for its smartphones and difficulty in expanding operations overseas.

Megaupload founder refused bail in New Zealand (Reuters)

AUCKLAND (Reuters) ? A New Zealand judge ordered the founder of online file-sharing site Megaupload.com to be held in custody for another month Wednesday, saying the suspected Internet pirate posed a significant flight risk.

Kim Dotcom, a German national also known as Kim Schmitz and Kim Tim Jim Vestor, was remanded in custody until Feb 22 ahead of a hearing of an extradition application by the United States.

Prosecutors say Dotcom was the ringleader of a group that netted $175 million since 2005 by copying and distributing music, movies and other copyrighted content without authorization. Dotcom’s lawyers say the company simply offered online storage and that he will fight extradition.

The judge said there was a significant risk Dotcom, who had passports and bulging bank accounts in three names, could try to

flee the country.

“With sufficient determination and financial resources, flight risk remains a real and significant possibility which I cannot discount and bail is declined,” Judge David McNaughton said.

Dotcom, 38, and three others, were arrested Friday after 70 New Zealand police raided his country estate at the request of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Officers cut Dotcom out of a safe room he had barricaded himself in within the sprawling mansion, reputedly New Zealand’s most expensive home.

LONG BATTLE LOOMS

Dotcom, dressed in the same black trousers and track suit top he was arrested in, showed no emotion when the decision was read out, but his lawyer said he was “very disappointed” and would appeal immediately.

“The judge has agreed with much of what we have submitted but he has taken a different view on the issue of flight risk,” Paul Davison told reporters.

The judge said the finding of unlicensed and illegal guns in the mansion, northwest of Auckland, pointed to possible criminal connections, which could make it easier to escape to Germany, where Dotcom would be safe from extradition.

Dotcom’s lawyers said he emphatically denied the charges. They also said he was suffering from diabetes and hypertension as well as receiving treatment for a slipped disc.

He now faces four weeks behind bars in Auckland’s main remand prison.

Megaupload and its related sites were among the Internet’s most popular, allowing users to upload and share all kinds of content.

The site boasted having a billion users and as much as 4 percent of all Internet traffic. Prosecutors say Dotcom personally made $115,000 a day from the business in 2010.

The judge said he could not assess whether the United States had a strong enough case against Dotcom or whether he had a good defense.

“All I can says is that there appears to be an arguable defense at least in respect of the breach of copyright charges,” McNaughton wrote.

McNaughton said he did not know how long a hearing would take, nor could it be heard “for some months.” Legal experts said the extradition process could drag on for an extended period, as with efforts to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to Sweden from Britain.

A group of Dotcom’s supporters left the court dejected and refused to talk to media.

Three other men charged with Dotcom were also remanded in custody and applied to the judge for separate hearings to make individual bail applications.

Turkish film highlights gay honor killing

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Shortly after telling his parents he was gay, Ahmet Yildiz was gunned down inside his car by his father in Istanbul. It was Turkey’s first officially recognized gay “honor killing.”

An award-winning film partly inspired by Yildiz’s story, which opened in dozens of cinemas across Turkey last week, is putting the spotlight on gays in a Muslim country that is seeking European Union membership but remains influenced by conservative and religious values.

The film “Zenne Dancer” ? or male belly dancer ? is not the nation’s first gay-themed movie but is the first to explore the little-known phenomenon of men killed by family members for being gay. So-called honor killings in Turkey usually target women accused of disgracing the family.

“Our main aim was to convey Ahmet’s story, but by doing so we also wanted to expose the pressure the (gay and lesbian community) faces from their family, the society and the state,” said Mehmet Binay, who co-directed and produced the film with his partner, Caner Alper.

“Zenne Dancer” won four awards at Turkey’s coveted Antalya Golden Orange film festival this year, including best First Film and Best Cinematography. Erkan Avci, who plays Yildiz’s character, won Best Supporting Actor. The movie was also recently chosen a Best Film by an association of Turkish film critics.

Yildiz, a physics student at Istanbul’s Marmara University, was shot dead on July 15, 2008 after he went out for an ice cream break while studying at home for his final exams.

An arrest warrant has been issued for his father, Yahya Yildiz, who has been charged in absentia for the murder. The father, who has been on the run for three years, is believed to be in hiding in northern Iraq.

Yildiz, who was a close friend of Binay and Alper, came from the conservative, mostly-Kurdish Sanliurfa province, where homosexuality is taboo and where officials have been struggling to stem the practice of honor killings of women. Women there have been killed for flirting or having a boyfriend without the family’s consent.

Gay honor killings are believed to be common in Turkey’s conservative heartland. But Yildiz’s murder was the first in Turkey to be reported by authorities as a gay honor killing.

Binay said Yildiz’s family suspected his homosexuality but believed he could be treated by imams and were pressuring him to return to Sanliurfa.

“He was killed shortly after he told them he would not be cured, would not return and that he was considering leaving for Germany where he might marry (his boyfriend),” he said.

In “Zenne Dancer,” Yildiz’s life is intertwined with the stories of two other male characters ? a flamboyant Zenne dancer named Can and a bisexual German photographer, Daniel.

A stranger to Turkey’s conservative traditions, Daniel encourages Yildiz to come out to his parents, insisting honesty was the best way to deal with his family.

“You don’t understand,” Yildiz responds in one scene: “Honesty would kill me.”

Binay said he and Alper were filming a documentary on male belly dancers when Yildiz was killed. Shocked by the murder, they put the documentary on hold and decided to create a feature film that blends the story of the Zenne dancers with Yildiz’s tragedy.

Turkish attitudes toward gay and lesbians are more relaxed compared to the 1980s and 1990s when police routinely raided gay bars, detained transvestites and banned gay festivals. Gay sex is not considered a crime in the country, and some bars and clubs in major cities openly cater to gays.

But a majority of gays still choose to hide their lifestyle in a country where liberal views have yet to make inroads in rural areas and many urban settings.

Last year, a former government minister described homosexuality as a biological disorder that needs to be treated, while municipalities have some leeway to introduce laws safeguarding “morality,” which gay activists view as a potential threat to their freedom.

Some gays openly acknowledge their sexual orientation, including poet Murathan Mungan and the late singer Zeki Muren. Zenne dancing itself harks back to the Ottoman Empire, a time when there was a degree of tolerance toward gay sex among some sectors of the elite.

Hebun LGTB, a gay and lesbian group based in the conservative city Diyarbakir that neighbors Sanliurfa, described the film as an opportunity to break ingrained attitudes toward gays in traditional areas.

“There was a piece of us in each of the characters,” said a group member, Arif, who declined to give his surname because his family does not know about his sexual orientation. “I am in the same situation as Ahmet Yildiz: If I was honest, I would be killed by my family.”

“If out of all the people who watch it, just 10 are able to change their attitudes, then the filmmakers should be happy,” he said.

Despite one article in a pro-Islamic newspaper that branded “Zenne Dancer” a “film for perverts,” Binay says he and Alper have not received any threats or hate mail, and that some 35,000 people have seen the movie in its first week.

Gulsah Simsek, a 23-year old student, watched “Zenne Dancer” in Ankara.

“Some of the swearing and some of the scenes shocked me,” she said. “But there must be so many people like (Yildiz) and it’s good that the pain they suffer is being told.”

Binay and Alper have been same-sex partners for 14 years and openly came out as a couple during one of the film’s early screenings. They regularly attend showings where they hold discussions on attitudes toward homosexuality.

The film is showing in 50 cinemas in 16 out of Turkey’s 81 provinces, including conservative Diyarbakir.

“The (positive) response we got in Istanbul wasn’t much different to the response we got in Diyarbakir,” Binay said. “We are encouraged by the attitudes in (traditional) regions.”

(AP) ? Danica Patrick became a worldwide sensation as a rookie at the Indianapolis 500, challenging for victory and becoming the first woman to lead laps in the showcase race.

Those Indy days are fading fast.

Patrick’s shift to stock cars is long under way and her ties to IndyCar were cut even further Monday ? she said she won’t run in this year’s Indy 500.

Her focus is entirely on NASCAR, and on May 27 she’ll race in the Coca-Cola 600. She said skipping the Indy 500 was a “business decision.”

“I hope to do it in the future, the Indy 500 that is, and maybe it will be a double,” she said. “But at this point in time, after a lot of conversations, it’s just going to be the Coke 600 and I think it’s going to be a big challenge. It’s just is something that didn’t work out, as far as the business side of things. … For this year, it just didn’t happen.”

Patrick led 19 laps late and finished fourth in 2005. She was a career-best third in 2009.

When she jumped full time to NASCAR she said the Indy 500 was still under consideration. Her NASCAR season includes the full second-tier Nationwide Series schedule for JR Motorsports and 10 races in the elite Sprint Cup Series for Stewart-Haas Racing.

Patrick had previously announced eight of her races. The Coca-Cola 600 ? Patrick jokingly called NASCAR’s longest event of the season “The Coke 6,000,” ? is the ninth announced race. The Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 are both May 27.

“We didn’t tell her she couldn’t run the 500. It was left up to her,” team co-owner Tony Stewart said. “It shows how dedicated she is to making this transition.”

Stewart, Robby Gordon and John Andretti have all tried to run both events on the same day. Stewart, NASCAR’s three-time champion, completed the double twice: In 1999, he was ninth at Indy and fourth at Charlotte, and in 2001, he was sixth at Indy and third at Charlotte.

He’s not tried Indianapolis since, and has let go of his childhood dream of winning the 500. He has twice won the Brickyard 400, NASCAR’s race at the storied Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“The hard part for me was you make that decision when you sign up to do (NASCAR),” Stewart said. “The decision you make, you have to come to peace with yourself with saying ‘I’m not going to do this.’ That was my childhood dream anyway. It may be a different scenario and feeling for her. But it was hard knowing when I signed that (NASCAR) contract that I was writing off the opportunity to go race at Indy.

“It’s figuring out at the end of the day what do you really want to do. I guess that’s the part that even though it was hard to watch opening day of practice at Indianapolis, I’m enjoying what I’m doing, too, and this is what I want to do at the end of the day,” he continued. “It makes you want 30-hour days and 400-day years and we always want to do more than what we’re capable of doing, but the reality is you have to pick at some point and choose your career path. This is what I’ve done and what she’s doing now.”

But Stewart said so long as Indianapolis Motor Speedway makes it logistically possible for Patrick to attempt both races, she may eventually run the race again. He said he has no interest in fielding a car for her, citing how much he’s already doing with all his other teams.

The IndyCar Series would also welcome back its most recognizable driver to its biggest event of the season.

“We continue to wish Danica the very best on this new phase in her career. The door is always open should she wish to run the Indianapolis 500 in the future,” IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said in a statement.

Patrick has already set some of her expectations for NASCAR, and sounded Monday as if she expects her debut in the Daytona 500 next month to go as well as her debut in the Indianapolis 500. She tested there two weeks ago with new crew chief Greg Zipadelli, and after leading 13 laps at Daytona in last July’s Nationwide race, likes her chances in the Feb. 26 season opener.

“At Daytona, the cars are very fast, so I feel good about that race,” she said. “I was lucky enough to get to run with Tony in the Nationwide race last summer and that went pretty good, so I feel good about Daytona and I think there’s a real chance, if luck falls our way, to perhaps win.

“I think it’s a real chance. I mean a guy like Trevor Bayne last year showed that. Those are the expectations for the first race.”

Bayne, a rookie last season, was the upset winner of the Daytona 500, which Stewart said was proof that Patrick is a viable contender.

“A rookie won it last year, why would you ever count yourself out?” he asked. “She’s a talented driver. Our cars were really fast at Daytona. At that point, I’d have that confidence.”

But Stewart is cautious regarding his expectations for Patrick. Although she said she’d like to knock down top-20 finishes in the Cup Series, the car owner was more concerned with Patrick simply turning laps and learning as much as she can before her scheduled full-time move to the Cup in 2013.

“I crashed everything that I drove when I drove the Nationwide cars. We got to the Cup side and it got better, obviously,” Stewart said. “But I think looking at it, these 10 races for her this year, for me, it’s just finishing the races and just getting the track time. I’m not worried about what her finish is at the end of the day.

“I think the success at the end of the year won’t be judged by where the finishing positions are at the end of the day, as much as what she takes away from each race weekend. That’s what my goal is for her.”

Patrick has higher goals for the Nationwide Series, where she’s run 25 races over the last two series. She has three top-10 finishes and one top five, all last season with JRM. The Daytona 500 will be her Cup Series debut.

“With the Nationwide stuff, it very much depends on the individual weekend itself. There are still some tracks that I haven’t raced before, so probably a little bit different expectations for those,” she said. “But, for the most part, solid top 10s and getting into the top five consistently through the year would be a goal. And I’d like to get to Victory Lane.”

3 convicted of anti-gay hate crime in Britain (AP)

LONDON ? Three men were convicted Friday of distributing anti-gay leaflets, and prosecutors called it a landmark case regarding the prosecution of hate crimes regarding sexual orientation.

A jury found the men to have distributed leaflets calling for homosexuals to face the death penalty. Two others were acquitted of the same charge.

“Everyone has a right to be protected by the law and we regard homophobic crimes, along with all hate crimes, as particularly serious because they undermine people’s right to feel safe,” said Sue Hemming, chief of the Crown Prosecution Service special crime division.

She said in a statement that the leaflet showed a mannequin hanging from a noose and said gay people were destined to go to hell.

One witness testified he felt he was being targeted and feared he would be burned, Hemming said.

Ihjaz Ali, 42, Kabir Ahmed, 28, and Razwan Javed, 27, were found guilty in Derby Crown Court. Sentencing is set for Feb. 10.

The men were prosecuted under a relatively new law that took effect in 2010. It makes it a crime to promote hatred based on sexual orientation.
